Portland Marathon Volunteer Opportunity- Kate Grace

BTC Youth Families,

BTC Pro Kate Grace is helping the Portland Marathon recruit and manage course marshals for this year's race on Sunday October 6th. They are looking for volunteers for 5-6 hours on race morning (this can also be split into two 3-hour shifts). This is an unpaid position, but the marathon is donating to any clubs who send 10 or more members to volunteer.

In addition to raising a bit of money for BTC, this is a way to give back to a great local race, cheer on runners, and maybe show off some BTC gear in the process. Details of the position are below (you man an intersection, make sure all traffic abides by the course markings, and serve as first contact for runners who have any questions or medical issues).

Please contact kate.c.grace@gmail.com if you are interested in volunteering!

Additionally, please reach out if you are a member of another running club, or coach of a high school team, and think there might be interest in sending a group. As well as netting a club donation from Portland Marathon, serving as a marshal counts for volunteer hours to fulfill high school quotas.

Position details:
Course Marshals are volunteers who man an intersection on the marathon course on Sunday, October 6th from roughly 6:30AM to 1PM. Course marshals are in charge of keeping traffic away from the marathon course, marking the marathon route, and keeping an eye out for runners with medical emergencies. Course marshals are assigned to a specific intersection on the route, and must be in place when the police conduct a pre-race course run through. The race cannot start until all course marshals are in position.

To help with recruiting, the Portland Marathon can make a donation to clubs or groups that "volunteer" as course marshals. In order to receive a donation, clubs/groups must have more than 10 members, and fulfill all race day duties. Club donations work out to roughly $10/volunteer per 3 hour shift.

BTC Youth Athletes and Parents,

More Important Information:

Registration

If you haven't done so already and are interested in participating this year, please complete the online registration.  Registration payment for this year should be done online this year so we don't have to collect anything at practice.  If you have not submitted payment, please see the online registration above.  Registration fees for the season is $100 per athlete or $200 maximum per family.  If the registration fee is a financial issue, please contact us about scholarships at youth@bowermantc.com.

Uniforms

Demand for larger sizes was bigger than we anticipated. To clarify for parents, a “youth” sizing is women’s sizing, i.e. a youth XS is a women’s XS. We believe the majority of youth athletes 12 and under (and some 13-14) will fit underneath this category. If you’ve already purchased a size larger than XS we encourage you to have them try it on to make sure that it fits appropriately.

We will only have size XS on hand tonight at the Nike practice location. We still encourage you to have your son/daughter try it on.
We are doing a rush order on the larger sizes and hope they will be available for the first meet next Saturday.

If you are at a different practice location other than Nike, please inform the location coach of your desired size and we will get the singlets to you next week!

Singlets ($40)
are new this season and will be the new uniform from 2019-21 season at a minimum, so everyone will need to purchase a new singlet.

Jackets ($40) will be available for optional purchase as soon as possible

IMPORTANT 2019 Youth XC First Day of Practice, Race Schedule and More

Everything you need to know about the start of the BTC Youth XC season from practice times, locations, fees and more.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION BELOW.
PLEASE READ ALL

BTC Youth Athletes and Parents,

The Youth XC season is here!  The first practice will be Tuesday, September 10th.

This year we will be hosting the first day of practice for all practice locations at Nike WHQ. Additionally practice will start at 6:30pm and run until 7:45pm.

This is to give Eastside and Sherwood families time to get out to Nike following work. We are hosting the first practice all together and at a later time for three reasons.

1 - We will run everyone through a typical practice schedule together including drills, stretching, core, etc. This gives everyone a chance to see all their teammates that they will only see at races and any outside of practice activities during the season.
2 - We will have uniforms available for purchase. The uniforms are new and everyone will need to purchase it.
3 - There is a special event happening with some of our BTC Professional Athletes at Nike on the same evening. BTC Pro athletes Lopez Lomong, Woody Kincaid and Matthew Centrowitz will be paced by Mo Ahmed in an elite 5,000m race on the track. The goal is to run the Olympic Standard qualifying time of 13:13. This is a really unique and never been done before opportunity to watch our athletes compete right in our backyard at Nike and we would love for anyone that is able to, to stick around and cheer on our pros! The race is scheduled to go off at 8:30pm on the Michael Johnson Track. We understand this might not be feasible for some families but we hope anyone interested is able to watch.

PARENTS- Please try to communicate with other parents if possible about the change. We want to avoid anyone showing up at the wrong location or time.

Practice will resume as normal on Thursday, Sept. 12th, where practice will be @ 5:30-6:45 for Nike WHQ and NE Portland locations and @ 5:45-7:00 for the Sherwood group. There will be no McMinnville sign-up this year as it falls on the second day of practice.

Please see below for a full list of everything you need to know for the start of the season including practice maps, race schedule uniforms and more.

Registration

If you haven't done so already and are interested in participating this year, please complete the online registration before the first day of practice.

What to bring to practice?

Its been a warm summer but the weather will get cooler soon.  Please get in the habit of bringing pants and long sleeve clothes for before and after practice.  There are drinking fountains at most of the practice locations, but it is also ok to bring your own water bottle.  Whatever is brought to practice, please label it with your name.

Parent Coaches

If any parents are interested in becoming involved as coaches throughout the season, please contact us at youth@bowermantc.com.  We also encourage parents to run on their own or with other parents while practice is going on.  Running is a great activity to enjoy as a family and it is always good to have more people out running looking out for our kids.

2019 Race Schedule

Below is the race schedule for the season.  It is a working schedule and meets may be added in over the course of the season. On weekends where there are multiple races, please only plan to attend one of the races to avoid racing too much.  Multiple meets are offered to provide different opportunities for people with busy schedules.  Participation at the races is not required.  The only time participation is required is for the Junior Olympic part of the season where you must run each race if you want a chance to participate in the next race.  For meets where specific schedule information is available, you can click on the race to view the race schedule.  We will send out announcements sign-ups for all of the races about a week out from each race.  For all races before the Junior Olympic season, registration fees are included in XC sign-up.  For the Junior Olympic season we will collect race registration later in the season.  You can see more updates to the race schedule and race results throughout the season at Athletic.net.
