Thank you participants, volunteers, spectators, sponsors and vendors for making the 10th annual Bowerman 5k the best year yet!
The 2019 Bowerman 5k was a massive success for the event with 1,200 registrants (a 30% increase!) marking an all-time high participation. Thank you to all participants for coming out and making the 2019 edition the best yet! A special thanks to all our race-day volunteers who make the Bowerman 5k possible every year. Additionally a big thank you and recognition goes to our sponsors (Rose City PT, Pete & Gerry’s, CLIF and MPTX Associates) and our vendors for making the race environment so incredibly fun!
We’d like to give special recognition to four competitors who have participated in all ten Bowerman 5k races (2010-19). Michael Nyman, Eric Kelso, Nareudee Jayanama and Joe Gould, thank you for your continuous support over the years.
In 2019, we saw a new champion in Paxton Smith, a Nike Intern and athlete at the University of Colorado, claiming victory with a finishing time of 14:45. BTC Elite’s Jordan Welling came in only 7 seconds behind first place in 14:52, making it a pretty solid day for the new dad! BTC Elite teammates Liam Meirow (15:02) and Julian Heninger (15:03) were separated by a mere 1 second to finish 5th and 6th respectively. For the Men’s masters division, it was another dominating performance for the Bowerman Track Club as Greg Mitchell (15:43) and Craig Godwin (15:57) claimed the top two spots with Josh Gordon and Matt Farley finishing fourth and fifth to round out the top five.
In the newly minted team’s divisions, we saw a Bowerman Track Club sweep as the BTC athletes claimed the titles for the Men’s, Women’s and Co-Ed Divisions.
On the women’s side, a trio of Bowerman athletes dominated the top spots with BTC Elite athletes Carrie Dimoff (16:07), Kaitlyn Peale (16:20 ) and Tara Welling (16:47) finishing 1-2-3. Keep your eyes out for Dimoff this fall as she heads to compete at the 2019 IAAF World Championships in the Women’s Marathon in Doha, Qatar on September 27th. The women's masters division saw Bowerman Track Club Masters athlete Lorilynn Bloomer win for a third consecutive year in dominating fashion clocking 17:40 over 5k, 0:50 seconds ahead of the next masters female.
We look forward to seeing everyone again next year!
The Bowerman 5k is an annual road race held in the month of July at the Nike Campus in Beaverton, Oregon. The 5k is a great opportunity to get the whole family involved in a fun and active event. Our competitors include young kids, stroller walkers, competitive masters and elite runners, and we encourage all ages and abilities to come and join the fun. If you’re looking for a 5k personal best, the course is a fast one! Over the years, the race’s popularity has grown and in 2015 it was rated as one of the 7 Must-Do 5k Races in the United States by Competitor Magazine.
Every year, the event raises money for the Achon Uganda Children’s Fund (AUCF), an organization focused on providing improved healthcare, education and exposure to sport in Uganda communities. The event has supported the AUCF every year since its inaugural run in 2010, and we hope to continue to expand our donation in years to come. TEAMS: If you’re not in the hunt for individual glory, there will now be a team race (5 runners to score) with male, female, and co-ed divisions. You must have 5 runners to complete a team. If you do not find a complete team by race day, you will be entered as an individual.
TRAINING PLAN: Sign up to receive a training plan with Coach Steve Edwards with twice weekly workout sessions starting June 1st. Workouts will be on Wednesdays (6:15pm) at Duniway Track and Saturday (9:00am) at Forest Park (Leif Erikson Trailhead). It will be a great way to get fit for the event, learn a few things, and build the BTC community! For more information on how to register and maps to practice locations, click HERE.
FUNDRAISING: Help us continue to support causes near and dear to our BTC Community. In addition to continuing to support the Julius Achon Foundation, we are adding fundraising opportunities to benefit two causes, including Lopez Lomong's "4 South Sudan" project and "Embrace Oregon", an organization that helps support local foster kids and families, including our own Andrew and Anne Bumbalough. You can have an impact even if you aren’t racing! Encourage family and friends to donate under your registration link. The highest fundraising campaign will receive an exclusive prize!
In addition to all that's new, we'll still have everything you loved about previous years: great vendors, chances to meet our pro athletes, the beautiful Nike Campus, a cool t-shirt, and, most importantly, a great race! Sign up today and we look forward to seeing you again next year!
