Youth Head Coaches
Dominic Arce
Youth head coachAthletic Experience
A Portland native, “Coach Dom” was a BTC Youth athlete in the program’s early years, then attended Lincoln High School and ran collegiately for Gonzaga University under the guidance of Pat Tyson. At Gonzaga, Arce was part of 3 NCAA XC Championships teams, and set the program record in the indoor 5k. Today, Dom trains with BTC Elite team, focusing primarily on the marathon. In 2025, Arce won the BMO Vancouver Marathon, setting a new course record in 2:14.32. (You can ask him his other PRs 😜 )
Coaching Experience
Coach Dom has been coaching with BTC since 2023 and leads both the Nike and Lake Oswego practice locations. Dom has also been integral part of the Bowerman Running Camp since it’s launch in 2019. His coaching philosophy has been strongly influenced by his high school and college coaches Eric Dettman, Charlotte Richardson, and Pat Tyson.
Coach Dom believes strongly in fostering a love for running and always prioritizes age-appropriate development and longevity in the sport over short term risks.
“As an athlete, I am most proud of my consistent, year upon year improvement. As a coach, I’m proud to be an example to my athletes that loving your sport and showing up every day with a passion to learn will be the foundation of everything else ahead.”
Sprints & Hurdles Head CoachSimon Kidder
Athletic Experience
Simon grew up in Bend, Oregon, where he developed a passion for soccer and track and field. He went on to attend Willamette University, competing in both sports. As a four-year starter on the men’s soccer team, he helped lead the program to a 2022 NWC Championship. On the track, Simon was a 3x conference scorer in the 400m hurdles and competed on both the 4x100m and 4x400m relay teams. After putting down his spikes, Simon recently made the jump from 400 hurdles to running his first marathon and survived to tell the story!
Coaching Experience
Simon has coached with BTC since 2025, and currently leads the Sprints and Hurdles Program. He played a key role in launching BTC’s first-ever Sprints and Hurdles Program and has been on the Bowerman Running Camp Staff since 2024. In addition, he has served as an Assistant Sprints and Hurdles Coach at Willamette University since 2024, helping guide both the men’s and women’s teams to third-place finishes at the 2025 NWC Championships.
Simon is passionate about creating a fun, inclusive, and competitive environment where athletes of all experience levels can develop their skills and love for the sport. His coaching philosophy is shaped by the mentorship of his former coaches, Ron Kidder, David Turnbull, Marissa Pariseau, and Mitch Kruse.
“Some of my favorite memories from my track career aren’t the races, they’re the teammates who made practices fun and every hard workout worth it. As a coach, I strive to create that same environment I experienced where athletes feel supported, connected, and excited to show up every day.”
Lauren McFarland
youth Program directorAthletic Experience
Lauren was a multi-sport athlete throughout middle and high school, so it may come as a surprise that she didn’t discover track and field until her junior year of high school. She competed in everything from relays to the 800 meters before eventually finding her stride in the hurdles during her senior year.
That discovery led her to California Lutheran University, where she specialized in the 400-meter hurdles and the 4x400-meter relay. During her collegiate career, she set school records in both events (only one still stands because records are meant to be broken!) and was named an All-American.
Since college, Lauren has stayed active through strength training, local 5Ks, and the occasional sprint triathlon. These days, though, Hyrox competitions may be the next challenge calling her name.
Coaching Experience
Lauren brings over a decade of experience in athletics and education, with past roles as Athletic Director, Assistant Principal, Cross Country and Track & Field Coach, and PE Teacher. Her background includes designing inclusive programs, mentoring athletes and coaches, and building strong community partnerships.
With a Master’s in Education and a Bachelor’s in Exercise Science, Lauren is deeply committed to youth development, equity in sports, and fostering a positive, competitive environment. As a Certified Track & Field and Strength & Conditioning Coach, she pairs technical expertise with a passion for helping young athletes reach their full potential – on and off the track.
"I believe that as coaches, we are building better humans through the vessel of sport. While we all want athletes to succeed, success isn’t always measured by a PR. True success is found in perseverance, sportsmanship, teamwork, and diligence both at practice and in competition. If athletes can develop those qualities while also having fun, then I consider that a true win."
