Known for his long, flowing stride and longer, more flowing* hair, Evan is one of the brightest stars in American distance running. A prodigious talent, he won everything there was to win in Illinois high school competition, claiming titles in XC, 1600m, and 3200m as well as anchoring the State Record 4x800m. From Jacobs High School he went on to the University of Wisconsin. After his freshman year Coach Jerry Schumacher moved to Portland to establish a professional group and Evan boldly followed him. His boldness was quickly rewarded with a World Championships team appearance in the 5,000m in 2009.

After struggling for two years with the effects of foot surgery, Evan returned with a vengeance in 2012 as a newly minted Steeplechaser, the event for which he is best known. He won the 2012 Olympic Trials in his fourth ever Steeplechase and set the American record of 8:06.81 in his fifth. He finished 6th at the Olympic Games in London.

Ever since that breakout season, Evan has had a stranglehold on the Steeplechase in the US and been a star on the international stage. In Paris in 2015 he ran 8:00 despite a heartbreaking fall on the last barrier, becoming the fastest steeplechaser ever born outside of Africa. Still, a global medal eluded him.

That all changed at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio, where won the silver medal. That was the first Olympic medal by a BTC athlete and America’s first in the steeplechase since 1984. He affirmed his status as one of the World’s best by taking home the Bronze medal at the 2017 World Championships.

The longest tenured BTC member, Evan has evolved over nearly a decade with the group from a helpless young kid to a veteran leader. As arguably the best looking and certainly the most stylish man in the group, Evan is naturally made fun of by his teammates. They are mostly just jealous- especially Dan Huling. Evan loves his family, the sun, and meticulous organization. He is an incredibly enthusiastic supporter of his teammates and generally brings positive vibes with him wherever he goes- unless, of course, he’s just lost a game (ask him about Frisbee Golf at your peril). He and his wife Sofia were married in October 2016. They have a cat named Thor.
